When young Emi went to a rescue shelter, she could have chosen any young, healthy, and thriving animal, but the one that really caught her eye didn’t match any of those attributes.
Benji is a senior dog who, at 18, was abandoned by his family at the shelter. However, it wasn’t long before Emi learned of his story.
Moved, the young woman went there to meet him and reverse her situation.
After all, after 18 years in a home, he couldn’t end his life in a shelter, alone.
“You were only at the shelter for two days before I knew you were coming home with me,” Emi said.
She adopted the dog, even though he was elderly, with the goal of giving him the best possible ending, making him feel loved every day for the rest of his life.
And so it was. “You were immediately loved by so many.”
Since then, the elderly man – who we can consider a small puppy, especially due to his small size – has been receiving palliative care.
“We knew we needed to make his last days the best.”
The little dog was able to enjoy many fun and special moments with his new family, from summer, through Halloween, and then on to Christmas!
Until the most special date of all arrived: his 19th birthday.
Thanks to the compassion of Emi and her family, this date could be celebrated in a real home, surrounded by people who loved him intensely!
The sweet dog, even though he was old, lived this last year in a very special way, being loved, cared for and enjoying every moment to the fullest, as if it were his last.
Until finally, it really was.
“So we said goodbye,” Emi said.
The moment, of course, left everyone very sad. Everyone only wished they had more time with this dog who, despite his advanced age, still had so much to see and experience.
Despite spending little time with his family, Benji left a mark that time will not erase.
“And now, forever, we have a Benji-sized hole in our hearts,” Emi expressed in a video showing the dog’s journey.
The video was posted by the young woman on her TikTok profile and touched many people – just like us.
With more than 810 thousand views, 160 thousand likes and 5 thousand comments, the publication made in 2024 continues to break hearts across the internet.
