What appeared to be just a small white lump in the middle of a dirt road forever changed the life of a camper in Oregon (USA), and also that of an abandoned puppy.
The episode, recorded on video and released by the Greenhill Humane Society, had repercussions on the web and was also featured on the international website The Dodo.
The encounter took place on a remote logging road, surrounded by dense forests.
The camper was on his way when he spotted the object on the ground. As he approached, he realized it wasn’t a twig or a rock, but rather a white cub, extremely thin, barely able to move.
Noticing the animal’s weak breathing, the man acted immediately.
Without wasting any time, the man offered the dog some shredded chicken, trying to regain his strength.
He then loaded the puppy into the car and drove hours to the headquarters of the Greenhill Humane Society , an animal rescue organization in Lane County, Oregon.
According to The Dodo , the man named the dog Santi, after the character Santiago from Paulo Coelho’s book The Alchemist. See:
Upon arrival at the shelter, veterinarians found the puppy to be severely underweight and had open wounds on all of its paws.
Even so, according to the team’s report, his temperament was calm and gentle, showing a desire for affection and food.
“Despite everything he has endured, Santi remains sweet and confident,” Greenhill said in an official statement shortly after the rescue.
The first few days at the shelter were dedicated to intensive care, including wound cleaning, balanced nutrition, and rest. In just 12 days, Santi began to gain weight and visibly recover.
It was on one of these days that Santi’s destiny took a definitive turn. A volunteer from Greenhill’s canine enrichment program, passing by the kennels, noticed the puppy’s sweet gaze and was enchanted. Shortly thereafter, he decided to adopt him.

Love at first sight
According to Greenhill, the volunteer introduced Santi to his wife and dog Phoebe, who quickly became inseparable.
The family asked for time to adjust, but promised to share updates on the dog’s new life.
According to the latest information released by the shelter, Santi is happy, healthy and living surrounded by love.

For the Greenhill team, in addition to celebrating Santi’s happy ending, the story reinforces the importance of paying extra attention on the roads and taking action in cases of abandonment.
“We are so grateful to have been a part of Santi’s story and will continue our work to help many more dogs like him find forever homes,” the charity said.
The importance of responsible adoption
Today, Santi is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, fully prepared for a long and healthy life. See below:
Greenhill emphasizes that, although the dog has already found his home, there are hundreds of other animals in the shelter waiting for a second chance.
The organization also advises that, for those who live outside Lane County, the best way to help is to find the nearest shelter and offer a home to a pet in need.
Donations and sharing stories like Santi’s also make a difference in maintaining rescue work and veterinary care.
Greenhill Humane Society continues to ask for community support to continue providing care, shelter, and love to the animals it rescues.
For them, every donation, every adoption, and every sharing of stories like Santi’s is one more step toward a world where no animal is left behind.
