Max is a golden retriever who has always had a special place in his owner Shari’s heart.
Now, in addition to the heart, the pet has a special place in the house, more specifically on a step.
The pet, who was born on August 21, 2010, passed away on January 20, 2023, and was greatly missed.
It was almost thirteen years of joy, games and affection alongside his guardian.
The loss of her pet was significant for Shari, who lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Therefore, she decided to pay tribute to her four-legged friend, whom she loved so much in life.
Homage
Max always had a favorite step on the stairs that connected the first floor to the second; there he liked to lie and watch the movement of the house.
A year after her golden retriever’s death, Shari decided to repaint the steps, leaving them black. However, for her, painting her pet’s favorite step didn’t make sense.
So, she skipped painting that step.
Because, besides being the dog’s favorite place to lie down, it was also the place he chose to fall asleep forever.
“I think you knew when the vet told me you were sick, that I would have spent every last coin I had to get you well. And then I would have begged, borrowed, and even stolen if I had to. I think you knew. I think you knew I would never be able to say yes to letting you sleep. So you put your head in my lap and surrendered yourself to eternal sleep,” he wrote in a post .

Therefore, she maintained the old characteristics of the wood, leaving the mark of the varnish worn from so much Max lying down, as well as a memorial plaque.
“Forever his,” Shari declared in a video she shared on her Instagram profile on January 21.
“A year without you, my dear. It feels like one of the longest years of my life. I hope you have a step, that is all yours, and that you love it as much as you loved this one.”
The post has accumulated more than 16 million views and thousands of comments full of affection and emotion.
“People say we don’t deserve dogs because they’re so pure and love unconditionally… you, you deserve dogs. This brought tears to my face. What a beautiful thing to do,” one user declared.
“How love changes the way you look at life and things,” commented another.
Look. I’ll tell you in advance, get a tissue ready.
In the unpainted step, in the mark of worn varnish and in the memorial plaque, Max remains alive, as part of the house and, above all, of his guardian’s heart.
The tribute is a testament to the unconditional love dogs offer and the eternal connection owners share with their pets.
