Rochinha is a black-coated mongrel who almost had his life taken .
But thanks to the quick action and commitment of kind people , his destiny changed forever: he overcame the pain , gained a new chance and today knows the true meaning of love and care .
This little cutie showed that miracles exist , proving that even the saddest stories can have a happy ending .
Rochinha, a warrior
The name Rocha already reveals how special this little mutt is. His story carries not only marks of pain, but also the strength of someone who fought for life and found in human love the chance to start over .
He lived in a quarry , along with other abandoned dogs. Volunteers from the Animal Aid project in Santa Isabel, São Paulo, would often come to the site to bring food and ensure that the guards fed them.
But Rochinha’s life changed drastically. As a puppy, around nine months old, he was run over twice by the same person, intentionally and in broad daylight.
In an interview with Amo Meu Pet , volunteer Ana Gomes reported that during one of their routine visits, they saw the dog lying on the side of the road. According to the security guard, a car had just hit him between two speed bumps and then reversed to run over him again.
Faced with this scene, the volunteers didn’t hesitate: they put the dog in the car and rushed to the clinic, in a true race against time to save his life.
The little one, defenseless and full of life ahead of him, almost had his story cut short in a cruel way , because the person who did this was certain of impunity – which should not happen, since in Brazil, animal abuse is a crime and must be punished by law .
The Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9,605/1998) establishes that mistreating, injuring, or mutilating animals is a crime. In 2020, the passage of the Sansão Law (Law No. 14,064/2020) made the penalty even harsher, providing for 2 to 5 years in prison , a fine , and a ban on ownership for those who commit violence against dogs and cats.
This shows that Brazilian law recognizes the gravity of animal cruelty and seeks to ensure greater protection and justice for innocent people who cannot defend themselves.
However, for the law to truly take effect, it’s crucial that cases are reported , investigated , and punishments are rigorously applied . Without oversight and accountability, the feeling of impunity persists, and new animals are put at risk .
And that’s how this little cutie began a journey that, at first glance, seemed impossible , but which turned into a moving story of overcoming and hope .
“They thought he had died and left, but when we passed by the place we noticed he was still alive,” wrote Ajuda Animal in a post on Instagram.
Rochinha’s fight
Rocha spent weeks in hospital , facing transfusions , probes , surgeries , multiple fractures , organ ruptures and kidney complications .
“When he got there [to the clinic] he was howling in pain and despair, he was given medication and we began a long journey,” said Ana.
But the team at Vivaz Veterinary Hospital wasn’t about to give up. With dedication and care , the professionals fought day after day to save his life.
“He was discharged after 20 days of hospitalization, his whole body was weakened, with many bedsores, he came home but had a lot of diarrhea, we did a test and it was confirmed that he had parvovirus,” he reported.
Rochinha’s fight was not easy due to his health condition, but, as Ana stated: ‘There were long days of medication and apprehension for his life, but he was there, fighting bravely’.
The medical team, the volunteers from Ajuda Animal and so many people who donated turned the few chances into a true chain of hope , allowing Rochinha to continue her fight for survival .
And to the joy of everyone who was rooting for this little stray dog : he did it! ” He overcame all the horror he went through ,” declared Animal Aid .
“Rocha came to teach us the true meaning of his name and, against all bad expectations, showed that he could still win. And he won!” declared Ana.
Due to his injuries , it was certain that Rochinha would become paraplegic . But, to everyone’s surprise , his willpower , combined with the tireless care of the veterinary team, made the unlikely happen: he could walk again .
The only after-effects were urinary incontinence and fear of people – marks that remind him of his pain, but do not erase the victory of his overcoming .
Second Battle of Rochinha
Rochinha won the most important battle: survival .
But there was a second one that kept Animal Aid volunteers awake at night : finding someone willing to deal with their traumas , insecurities and even their pee around the house .
This seemed like the hardest part of the journey, as it required patience , dedication , and unconditional love —rare qualities, but capable of transforming the life of a dog marked by pain .
It was then that an angel appeared!
Sara Reis , the shelter ‘s godmother, had also helped in Rochinha’s rescue and carried a special feeling in her heart : that of adopting a dog that, for some reason, didn’t have much of a chance of being adopted .
In this desire , Sara found in Rochinha exactly what she was looking for: a little dog marked by scars , but also full of hope .
She knew she could help him heal the wounds of his body and soul , offering what he needed most: love and acceptance .
“And that’s how Rocha said goodbye to the shelter, already hugging his mother, cuddling, and with no intention of biting her shins lol,” wrote Ajuda Animal.
Now Rocha lives the life every dog ​​deserves: surrounded by love, care, and the security of a real home.
“Rocha today found a family to be his, he has a mom and two cute brothers, they live in complete harmony in a home full of love and affection, even incontinent his mom didn’t measure because of his special needs, but because of his special life after so many adversities proving that life is worth living!!”, concluded Ana.
