Best friends, brothers, and playmates. These are Charlie, a golden retriever, and his best friend, Roger, a fluffy white rabbit. The pets, who live in Franklin, Massachusetts, do everything together. Even mischief.

An example of this? The two were recently caught digging several holes in their backyard. Some say the golden retriever taught the rabbit, but knowing the rabbit’s instincts up close, I’m even skeptical if it wasn’t the other way around, hahaha!

The fact is that the guardian, upon seeing the hilarious scene, opened the camera on her cell phone and started recording the two’s mess and soon shared it on social media.

In the video, the two happily jump around and dig several holes, though the golden retriever’s are obviously much larger and more destructive. The rabbit, on the other hand, digs small holes, but very deep and at an incredible speed. The adorable scene quickly went viral on social media. The unique friendship between these two companions touched thousands of people around the world, allowing the pets’ profiles to gain notoriety on social media.

How did the friendship begin?

The story behind Charlie and Roger’s unusual friendship sparked much curiosity among the profile’s followers. So, the animals’ owner detailed how it all began.

“Charlie met his brother Roger when he was just 7 weeks old. It was a magical meeting, almost as if fate had been planning this meeting all along. They bonded immediately, perhaps because they were almost the same size at the time,” he said.

From that moment on, Charlie and Roger were never far from each other. Even though their golden retriever has grown up, nothing stops them from doing everything together.

“Even though Charlie has grown considerably since then, about 10 times the size of Roger, this difference hasn’t stopped them from building a strong and special friendship,” he says.

But after all, can dogs and rabbits live together and be friends?

Having a rabbit and a dog living together peacefully is possible, but requires proper care and supervision from their owners. Before forming this family, it’s important to consider the individual personalities of both the rabbit and the dog, as well as follow some guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals.

According to São Paulo veterinarian Lygia Karla Francelino, keeping dogs and rabbits in the same environment can be risky. “Even if they were raised together and the dog is docile, it’s still a predator and the rabbit is prey. Unfortunately, accidents can happen,” she warned.

In addition to prevention, the veterinarian lists some tips for dog and rabbit owners.

“If you already have rabbits and dogs, it’s very important to provide enrichment activities appropriate for each species, as well as a safe, fear-free environment for each. This way, each animal can express its behavior and be as happy as possible,” he concluded.
