For a while, the border collie Benício believed he had everything a dog could ever want — a home, food, a family, and a warm lap to rest on. Until one day, he heard his humans say a baby was on the way.
Benício didn’t quite understand what that meant. It sounded like something good, right? They seemed excited…
But the reality turned out to be very different. Little by little, Benício began to feel left out.
First came the changes in routine. Then the rush, the new furniture. Until one day, the door closed behind him — and he was left outside, alone, not understanding why.
Out on the street, he felt fear, sadness, and confusion. Why was this happening? He hadn’t done anything wrong.
What he didn’t know was that fate wasn’t punishing him — it was making room for something much better.
A New Life
One day, Benício crossed paths with Letícia Almeida. She was a few weeks pregnant with her baby, Miguel, but when she saw the abandoned dog, she knew he deserved another chance.
She took him home, gave him a bath, food, and — most importantly — a new sense of belonging.
When baby Miguel was born, the once-abandoned dog quickly filled every corner of the house and every inch of his new family’s hearts.
On Instagram, Letícia shared a video compilation of the baby playing with Benício, writing:
“To the former owner who left him on the street because you had a child… You have no idea what you lost.”
And she added in the caption:
“If he was ever a street dog, he doesn’t remember.”
The videos show Miguel walking toward his furry friend, hugging him, taking him for walks, laughing at his kisses, and sharing his toys.
Benício — big and clumsy as he is — seems to measure every step, careful not to hurt the “mini human” who has become his best friend.
“Benício hit the jackpot,” one follower commented.
“That person abandoned him, but in truth, it was a blessing for the dog,” wrote another.
“It’s so beautiful to see how gentle he is with the little human he protects at home,” added a third.
Abandonment Is Never Justifiable
According to Four Paws International, the birth of a baby is one of the most common reasons dogs and cats are abandoned.
When life gets busy and time feels scarce, many owners realize too late that they weren’t prepared to share their lives with a pet.
“Caring for an animal takes time and commitment,” the organization explains. “It’s important for owners to think ahead and consider how they’ll care for a pet in different situations before adopting.”
But abandonment is never the answer.
The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) states that with planning and empathy, it’s entirely possible to prepare a dog for the arrival of a baby and ensure a peaceful coexistence.

Their recommendations include:
-
Basic training: Commands like “sit” and “stay” help maintain safety and control.
-
Gradual adaptation: Introduce the dog to baby sounds and smells before birth.
-
Routine adjustments: Change walk and feeding times gradually to avoid sudden disruptions.
-
Doll training: Hold a doll as a stand-in baby to help the dog get used to the new dynamic.
