Rockland is a mixed-breed dog who was a community dog for almost a ecade. The mutt depended on the kindness and gentleness of the residents of a building to feed him.
Time passed and the condominium residents were no longer able to care for him, and, in order not to leave him helpless, they asked for help from the Animal Haven animal shelter, located in New York, in the United States.
After many years, the elderly man would finally have a comfortable and cozy place to live.
Due to his age, Tedi Sarah, a volunteer at the shelter, feared that Rockland wouldn’t be adopted. To make matters worse, the mixed-breed dog had been diagnosed with cancer. Tedi didn’t think it was fair for the pet to spend his last days without the love of a family, so she did everything she could to help him find a home.
“As soon as I met him and heard his story, I knew I had to help him,” Sarah told The Dodo . “My immediate thought was, ‘He can’t die in the shelter. He can’t die without knowing the love and comfort of his own family.’”
So the volunteer made a video of the elderly man and shared it on social media, pleading with someone to give lonely Rockland a chance. Because it was Christmas time, Tedi believed that people would be touched and someone would adopt him.
“We all adored him at the shelter and would love nothing more than to see him find his forever family while he still can,” Sarah wrote in the post.
Tedi was right; it wasn’t long before people showed interest in the mixed-breed dog. Soon the dog was safe in a home he could call his own. Bessy Gatto adopted him.
“[She] has a huge heart and has rescued many dogs with special needs before,” Tedi said. “She had seen me post about him before, during my visits to the shelter, and then when his Christmas post went up, she immediately reached out and contacted the shelter to adopt him.”
Now, Rockland has a family and many canine siblings. The dog will never again remember what it’s like to live alone on the streets, depending on the generosity of others for food. May he be very happy!
