We are beings who, in our particularity, possess characteristics, qualities, and also flaws. And it is the combination of all this that makes us special and unique in the world. And it’s no different with animals! Like the case of Hellena, a Pekingese dog, who, even blind and mute, has not ceased to be special in the lives of her owners.
The family resides in Sorocaba, São Paulo. In an interview with Amo Meu Pet , Ana Claudia, the pet’s owner, explained that Hellena came into her life through adoption. In December 2021, the family’s veterinarians, Bruna Paola and Cecília, chose Ana to adopt the puppy, who was six months old at the time.
The choice was made because the professionals knew that Ana wanted to adopt a blind dog, and they also saw in her someone with a kind heart and capable of offering the love and care that the pet would need to have a happy and healthy life.
“Dr. Bruna is the veterinarian for my other animals, and she knew I wanted to adopt a blind puppy,” Ana told Amo Meu Pet.
Unfortunately, the puppy was rescued from abuse. Due to an eye disease, her former owner took her to veterinarians, asking them to remove her eyes, but they refused, wanting to try another procedure. Frustrated, he took her to another clinic that performed the surgery without hesitation.

“My pets’ veterinarian refused to remove it without trying to save it, but the previous owner didn’t want to, and took her to another clinic that removed it,” she reported.
A woman, who knew the man and was also a client of the clinic Ana frequents, upon learning of the case, immediately contacted him and convinced him to give away the puppy—so that she would no longer suffer at his hands.
So after much discussion, he gave in and handed the puppy over to the veterinarians.
Hellena remained under the care of the professionals until her stitches were removed, so she could begin a new life alongside her future guardian. And on the day Ana came to pick her up, it was pure joy for both the woman from São Paulo and the pet.
“When I saw that cotton ball, I fell in love, and it immediately started wagging its tail at me,” she recalled.
The puppy is an albino Pekingese, likely a result of inbreeding. Tests revealed she also has a heart murmur and orthopedic problems in her front legs. Over time, the family also discovered she is mute, as she has never barked.
Despite her condition, she is very energetic, described by her owner as ‘a whirlwind’. And to make it easier for the little dog to move around, Ana made a small room just for her, where all her belongings are easily accessible, and there are no objects obstructing her path, so she doesn’t bump into anything.
“She doesn’t even seem blind, she’s so happy,” he declared.
