Can you imagine a dog interacting with an animal of another species? Sociable as they are, it’s not hard to imagine them being friends with chickens, parakeets, and parrots, right?
But what if I told you a dog befriended a shark? Can you picture that scene? No?
I couldn’t either, until I met Lili, an adorable three-year-old dog who lives on an atoll in French Polynesia called Fakarava.
Friendship
Emmanuelle Larchet adopted Lili when she was just one month old, and since then the little dog has shown her aquatic side, as even as a puppy, she loved swimming in the lake near her home.
“She’s really a water dog,” Larchet told The Dodo .
But there’s a detail in this swim: she’s not alone, as around 100 sharks live in this lake!
I wouldn’t be able to swim in a place like that, would you?
But Emmanuelle assures that there is no problem with the pet swimming there, as the sharks that circle the area are nurse sharks, very docile creatures.
“We call them sea puppies because [they are] like dogs, actually… They are very nice,” Emmanuelle said.
Nurse shark
According to the São Paulo Aquarium , the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) is a calm and friendly species that spends most of its time still, being more active at night, when it hunts.
They have sensory tools, such as barbels, that help them locate prey buried in the sand.
They can live up to 25 years, reach 4 meters in length and weigh more than 300 kg.
Their diet includes small fish, molluscs and crustaceans.
Found in warm waters of sandy beaches and coral reefs in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the species’ conservation status is classified as “Data Deficient” by the IUCN, but it is threatened by habitat destruction and overfishing.
The friend
Lili is not afraid to swim alongside these magnificent animals, but among them, one in particular has won her heart: Sharky.
Sharky is Lili’s best sea friend, and she recognizes him because of a marking on his fin.
“He comes to greet her every time she sees him,” Emmanuelle said.
Watch their meeting in the video below.
The guardian says she is delighted with the friendship between Lili and Sharky.
“When I see her swimming with Sharky, I feel so happy,” Larchet said.
This duo’s friendship is incredible!
Another cute friendship
Gunner, a golden retriever, and Delta, a dolphin, developed a unique friendship at the Dolphin Research Center in Florida that lasted nearly a decade.
They met when Gunner was just 8 weeks old and Delta, a 4-year-old dolphin, took a shine to the dog’s calm demeanor.
Over time, the two learned to play together, creating a special bond.
Although they now meet less frequently, their friendship remains a charming example of cross-species bonds.
