A dog rescued from abandonment and possible abuse has been given a new lease on life thanks to his owner’s initiative. She placed a sign in the garden of her beach house encouraging people to pet him.
The simple gesture made the animal, named Bill, feel more welcomed and loved, after going through several health and adaptation problems.
Bill was found by Clarice Bez’s family in October 2022, on their farm in Corupá, Santa Catarina. He was injured, starving, and infested with parasites.
“It was a Sunday, my kids were here, and at first he wasn’t afraid. We offered him food, and he ate it with great hunger. We saw he was hurt, a side wound, a deep cut, and it was healing. He even hurt himself because there was a bone in the food, and his gums ended up bleeding, and that made me feel very sorry,” Clarice said in an interview with Amo Meu Pet .
During the interview, the farmer stated that she did not plan to keep the dog, as she had already lost two pinschers previously.
She returned the animal to a person who claimed it on Facebook, noting that she was not home at the time and that her husband was responsible for the delivery.
But the wife of the person responsible for finding the dog did not recognize him, and so he was returned, but since Clarice was not at home, her husband insisted that the dog could stay with the new family to make up for the loss of their missing dog.
Upon returning from her trip, she was very sorry to miss the dog, and after about ten days Bill appeared again at the farm, then Clarice knew she could not return him.
“So I said to the whole family: ‘I’m sorry, but if he’s like this on the street it’s because he doesn’t have a family,’” he emphasized.
Deciding to adopt Bill was easy, but he faced challenges, including intestinal surgery and treatment for a spinal infection.
After being in and out of several clinics and receiving intensive care, Bill recovered and became part of the family who frequently traveled to their beach house, about 60 miles away.
Clarice, a farmer and fish farmer in the winter, had to leave to go to work, taking Bill with her to the beach house, where he could not go out alone.

It was then that she realized he was feeling lonely and sad, as people passing by the fence moved away from him, either out of fear or disinterest.
She then had the idea of putting a sign in the yard that read: “My dog is Bill. He’s friendly. He just wants to be petted . ”

The sign benefited Bill’s well-being, increasing the attention and affection of pedestrians and other dogs who played with him.
Although Clarice walks him several times a day, it doesn’t compare to the freedom on the farm, where he has canine companions.

“Today he’s part of the family. Last winter, he went after a dog in heat, and I couldn’t produce or work until he returned. From the moment we adopt a dog, we assume full responsibility and can’t take care of it more or less,” concluded the owner.
Today, Bill is a happy, healthy, and grateful dog who wears a tag that shows how special and loved he is. He’s proof that every animal deserves a second chance at happiness.
