Amidst the pain and mourning, a new love story emerged.
After the tragic death of her dog Terra, a caramel-colored mutt named Athena took on a noble mission: to care for six orphaned puppies as if they were her own.
The story, recorded by Laurel Lingenfelter on social media, quickly won over thousands of hearts around the world.
It all started in February, when Laurel and her partner, Rob, took in Terra — a pregnant dog found abandoned, chained to a tree in Savannah, Georgia (USA).

Terra was welcomed with great care, monitored throughout her pregnancy, and on March 2nd, she gave birth to eight healthy puppies.
Unfortunately, Terra already had a serious health problem: a heartworm infestation, which could only begin to be treated after the birth of the puppies.
Her body already weakened, she went into heart failure a few days after giving birth and, despite all efforts, had to be euthanized. Furthermore, two of her puppies also did not survive.
Saying goodbye was difficult—not just for Laurel and Rob, but for everyone who followed Terra’s journey toward a second chance.
Without their mother, the cubs would face a difficult childhood.
In addition to breastfeeding, it is through living with their mother that they learn essential behaviors, limits and even socialization skills.

That’s where Athena, the family’s rescue dog, came in.
Although she had never had cubs, Athena instinctively demonstrated impressive maternal behavior.
From the very first moments, Athena approached the little ones with delicacy.
She began cleaning them, licking their ears, and standing beside them like a tireless guardian.
Little by little, he began to teach typical canine behaviors: how to play, communicate and interact.
When the puppies were five weeks old, Athena finally let them out to play—a sign that she thought they were ready to start exploring the world.
“She grooms them, licks them, teaches them what it’s like to be a dog. It’s like she’s channeling Earth.
She protects them in a way that gives me peace,” Laurel wrote in one of her TikTok captions ( @mythologicaldogs ).
The video of Athena starting to care for the puppies quickly racked up tens of thousands of views, emotional comments, and likes.
“All I do is cry,” said one follower.
Another wrote: “Earth is smiling hugely right now knowing her babies are safe.”
A third comment sums up the collective sentiment: “This is what the world needs: more love like Athena.”
Athena’s maternal instinct, even though she’s never had puppies, reinforces something many owners already know: dogs feel, care, and love—often in an even purer way than expected.
Now, the six puppies continue to develop healthily, with plans for adoption in May.
Athena, for her part, remains steadfast in her mission as an adoptive mother — and, who knows, the official protector of broken hearts in Laurel’s house.
Between losses and new beginnings, what remains is one certainty: love, when it finds space, flourishes even in the most unlikely situations.
