In the quiet outskirts of Tucson, Arizona, a feral cat named Shrek was living a life of hardship. He had found himself among a colony of cats near an airport, but he was far from welcomed. In fact, Shrek was often the target of bullying from the other cats, a constant outsider struggling to survive. His malnourished body, scarred appearance, and partially blind eyes told the story of a life filled with difficulty. Yet, little did he know, his luck was about to change in a way that would transform his future forever.

Shrek’s story took a turn for the better when Emily Shields, the founder of Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary, discovered him. Emily had always dreamed of running a cat rescue, a dream that became a reality in 2020 when she purchased land in Tucson during the pandemic to establish the sanctuary. The goal was simple yet profound: to provide a safe haven for cats in need, particularly those who had been abandoned or mistreated. In just three years, Whiskers N Wishes had managed to successfully adopt out 377 cats, a testament to Emily’s dedication and love for animals.

It was through the generosity and care of people like Emily that Shrek’s life would be given a second chance. His condition, when Emily first saw him, was dire. Shrek was undernourished, frail from the constant bullying, and dealing with a debilitating eye condition called entropion. This condition caused his eyelids to grow inward, making his eyelashes constantly rub against his eyeballs. The pain from this had left Shrek partially blind, making it harder for him to find food or defend himself from the other cats in the colony. He was, in every sense of the word, a cat who had been overlooked by society, left to suffer in silence.

Malnourished, scarred, and partially blind

Shrek’s story reached Emily when Courtney, the founder of Poets Square Cats—a rescue group with over 1 million followers on TikTok—sent her a message. While watching a movie with her kids, Courtney came across Shrek in the colony, and after seeing his desperate situation, she reached out to Emily to see if Whiskers N Wishes could take him in. Emily immediately knew she had to help. She agreed to take Shrek into her care, and soon the little cat was on his way to a safer life at the sanctuary.

Upon arriving at Whiskers N Wishes, Shrek received the much-needed care he had been missing for so long. Emily explained, “Like many male street cats, he is FIV positive.” Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is common among feral cats, and while it can impact their health, with proper care and attention, cats with FIV can live full, happy lives. But Shrek’s struggles didn’t stop there. His physical condition required immediate attention. He needed entropion surgery to fix his painful eye condition, as well as dental surgery. Emily and the team at Whiskers N Wishes worked tirelessly to ensure Shrek received the medical care he desperately needed.

I always wanted to run a cat rescue

Despite the many surgeries and medical treatments, Shrek’s spirit remained strong. His transformation over time was remarkable. As his health improved, so did his outlook on life. He was no longer the bullied and sickly cat from the colony. With proper care, nutrition, and love, Shrek started to thrive. His scars from his past life began to fade, but the most important change was in his demeanor—Shrek was learning to trust again, something that had been difficult for him after so much hardship.

But Shrek’s journey wasn’t over yet. As he continued to heal, Emily’s sanctuary became home to more and more cats in need. Whiskers N Wishes was expanding, and Emily’s dream of rescuing and caring for cats was becoming a reality. “We’ve been expanding every six months, with the latest expansion beginning in January 2023,” Emily said proudly. The sanctuary had already been home to so many cats like Shrek, each one with a unique story and a new chance at life, thanks to Emily’s unwavering commitment.

Then, just as Shrek was finding his place at the sanctuary, something unexpected happened. A couple from New York, who had been following Shrek’s journey on social media, decided to adopt him. It was a whirlwind decision, but one made with a deep love for this sweet cat who had captured so many hearts online. Shrek’s new family was determined to give him the best life possible, one full of love and comfort, far from the struggles of his past.

In a heroic gesture, Shrek’s new dad made the long journey to bring him to his new home. He flew to Phoenix, drove to Tucson, picked up Shrek, and then returned to New York—all in the same day. It was a monumental trip, but for Shrek, it was worth it. The journey marked the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with the comfort and safety of a loving home.

Now, as a house cat, Shrek enjoys a life filled with the things he once only dreamed of: soft beds, good food, and, most importantly, the love of his family. He’s no longer the frightened and malnourished cat from the colony. He’s a well-loved companion, thriving in a home where he’s treated like family. His journey from a neglected, bullied cat to a cherished member of a loving household is a testament to the power of rescue and the importance of compassion for animals in need.
