A guardian, upon discovering she was pregnant, began receiving a series of negative comments about her dachshund dog, also known as “sausage dog” .
However, she responded in a surprising way, showing that love and inclusion can overcome any obstacle.
The story was shared in a TikTok video by user @gabicostaribeiro , published on February 5, 2023.
Gabriela Costa Ribeiro, the owner, revealed that when she announced her pregnancy, many told her that her dog Cacau would lose her status as a daughter and would have to be treated just like a pet.
“I’ve heard a lot of things about my little dog. Cacau, now she’s going to lose her position. Now she’s going to become a real dog, you can’t keep her inside the house anymore, okay? You’ll have to give her away. This breed doesn’t like children, you can’t call her daughter anymore, you know?”, Gabriela reported in the video.
Despite initial insecurities about how Cacau would react to the baby’s arrival, Gabriela, her husband, and her family committed to making sure the dog felt included throughout every stage of the pregnancy and birth.
“Cacau is part of our family, very important to our history, and I didn’t want her to suffer. Of course, change was inevitable; our lives would change, we would change, but it was our role to make her feel included in all this change too.”

During pregnancy, Cacau was present at every significant moment.
She helped paint baby Helena’s room, helped put together her layette, and was by Gabriela’s side when packing her hospital bag.
The dog was also part of the pregnancy photo shoot and accompanied her owner in physical exercises for the natural birth.
Interestingly, Helena was born on the same day as Cacau’s birthday , which made the baby’s arrival even more special.
After Helena’s birth, the family continued to include Cacau in all activities.
“The day we got home from the hospital, we went to pick up Cacau from my mother and she met Helena for the first time. What a moment!”, recalled Gabriela.
The puppy quickly took an interest in the new member of the family, getting used to the baby’s smell, presence and even crying.
“I don’t remember a single feeding, even in the early hours of the morning, when she wasn’t there.”
To ensure that Cacau continued to feel part of the family, the owner took practical measures, such as placing the dog’s bed in Helena’s room.
“An important thing we did was put her bed in Helena’s room.”

Today, at one year and ten months old, Helena already interacts confidently with Cacau. She helps her mother bathe the dog and learns every day how to care for animals.
Furthermore, the two became drawing and playing companions.
Gabriela encourages other pregnant women who have dogs to do the same, emphasizing that a dog will be present at every stage of life.
“A dog will be with you through every stage of your life, he just needs you to be with him too.
