At the beginning of the British summer, Beckie Louise Ryan began noticing a small nocturnal visitor prowling around her backyard.
It was a hedgehog who seemed to have chosen that space to live. Beckie, delighted, began calling him Henry.
For weeks, she grew accustomed to her new friend’s presence, watching him scour the lawn at dusk. Then, in late August, something changed.
Henry entered the house and began acting strangely. He seemed slow, confused, as if asking for help . Beckie realized this wasn’t just a casual visit.
That’s when she did what any animal lover would do: she sought help.
Beckie called the British Hedgehog Conservation Society, asking for advice on what to do.
“They advised me to put Henry in a crate with water, dog food and a towel, and gave me phone numbers to call in the morning if he got worse,” Beckie said in a TikTok video .
During the night, she watched the little animal devour the food and playfully knock over the water bowl a few times.
A few hours later, Henry seemed recovered. At 1:45 a.m., Beckie released him into the garden.
“He got out of the box, seemed to thank me with a look and ran off,” he wrote.
And it was in that brief, silent look that the story began to change.
The surprise
Two days later, the familiar sound of light footsteps announced the hedgehog’s return. But this time, he wasn’t alone .
Beckie opened the door and saw, to her amazement, that Henry, or rather Henrietta , had returned with five newborn puppies .
The scene seemed like something out of a fairy tale: the little mother had returned to the only place where she had felt safe.
“I grabbed the largest box and carefully placed them all inside,” Beckie reported. “We placed heat packs on a towel underneath the box and added food and water for Mom and two more towels inside the box. Then we left them alone.”
Henrietta had found the perfect refuge. With the help of the Tiggywinkles organization, Beckie was instructed to leave the box outside, open, so that the mother could lead the chicks back to the nest when she felt ready.
For days, Beckie watched discreetly, making sure everyone was okay.
“It was an honor to help Henrietta, and we know it won’t be the last time we see her. She entrusted us with her babies, and we are honored.”
On social media, the episode moved thousands of people.
“How beautiful, I love humans who honor animals,” commented one follower.
“So you’re a hedgehog midwife??!!”, joked another.
“You’re simply brilliant. And of course, now you’re also a godmother,” said another.
Today, Beckie still sees Henrietta wandering around the yard.
“Who needs TV when you can sit on your back porch and watch this magic?” he joked.

According to the San Diego Zoo , hedgehogs are nocturnal mammals covered in spines made of keratin, the same material as our fingernails and hair.
Although they may appear to be related to porcupines, they are actually more closely related to shrews and moles. They live alone, sleep in shallow burrows, and have a keen sense of smell. A female can have four to seven pups per litter.
While many hedgehogs face threats from habitat loss, most populations in Europe are still stable.
